Welcome to the Global Perspective Podcast, everyone.
Today, we live in a world where the voices of moderation, civility, and decency find it challenging to gain a reasonable audience and acceptance. As a result, we see moderate politicians, leaders, and people of good intentions throwing in the towel and quitting prematurely because of frustrations and a sense of being lonely. Hope-based messages based on facts, figures, morals, and good character do not matter, and tolerance-based messages based on building an all-inclusive society are unprofitable.
People of good character, morals, and solid values are currently being tempted to become extremists to be relevant. We see people with wild conspiracy theories with baseless assertions and alternative facts dominate the public discussion with seemingly great followership. They tend to have substantial financial benefits from such unprecedented followings.
The meek and reasonable leaders are seen as weaklings, and for them not to be seen as such, they shut up and take a back seat. It should not be so. We, the people, need to make conscious efforts to turn things around by coming out of our comfort zones and adding our voice to meaningful public conversations. Because each passing day, moderate voices withdraw from the leadership, the stage we mortgage the future.
Many see the world from their lenses and refuse to see issues globally, which means taking a comprehensive approach to issues. If we do, we will be able to understand each other well. We will be able to appreciate one another and be able to have mutual respect for one another. Currently, this is disappearing, and it should not. Good people need to speak up and speak out. I remember the beautiful words of Edmund Burke, the brilliant Irish statesman and politician who said, “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.” I am persuaded that at this point, reasonable people need to stay active, be informed, and participate in leadership processes because passive followers may not get good leaders.
We need to continue to dialogue and admit our preconceived notions and biases. We need to stop demonizing others who are obviously different from us in all realms and respect, be it race, tongue, culture, and others.
In upcoming episodes, I will be bringing respectable, thoughtful, and global-minded leaders of thoughts who will help do justice to topical issues. So please, be on the lookout.
Thank you for your time. I am Oluranti Ladapo.
